Computers in the health care setting

1.5 points + 2 hours per week for 8 weeks + Second semester + Gippsland + Note: This subject is not available to computing students

Objectives On completion of this subject students should understand the requirements of computer literacy for health professionals; be able to operate a microcomputer and to use common software packages; and understand the applications and the social impact of computers in health care.

Synopsis Students will have a basic understanding of information technology, study the use of the computer as a tool for nursing practice and patient care delivery, and consider some of the issues and implications of computer usage in the health care system. The subject includes: computer concepts - hardware and software; using computers - hospital information systems, computer applications in health care; computers in society - impact of information technology in the health care setting; practical component - use of computer applications packages (word processing, spreadsheet, database).

Assessment Assignments: 50% + Examination: 50%
