Introduction to business computing

6 points + 4 hours per week + First semester + Caulfield

Objectives At the completion of this subject students should understand modern business processing software; understand data storage and processing devices and capabilities; and appreciate communications capabilities and standards.

Synopsis Introduction to computer systems and the different roles which individuals play in the computer industry. Computer and communications hardware, with an emphasis on office technology. Data: presentation, storage devices and capabilities. Software: types of operating systems, application development, packaged software, turn-key systems. Files and file organisation. Social issues. Quality and the need for standards. Communication standards and Australian telecommunications. Selection and installation of computer systems.

Assessment Examination: 50% + Practical work: 50%
