Objectives At the completion of this subject students should be able to understand document and image processing fundamentals; understand the issues involved in direct interfacing of document imaging systems to database; describe document image retrieval techniques; and quantify the network load effects of document image processing systems.
Synopsis In this subject students will study computerised document imaging systems and interfacing to database retrieval systems. The specific topics studied include: document imaging principles; information management; scanning and recognition techniques; extraction of textual and pictorial information; compression techniques for storage; interface to database systems; query languages for document and image retrieval; standards and case study of commercial systems; issues involved in computer document and image processing in LANs and WANs.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 60% + Two practical assignments: 40%
