Systems security and privacy

4 points + 2 hours per week + Second semester + Caulfield + Prerequisites: COT1140 or COT1800

Objectives At the completion of this subject students should be able to discuss the OECD guideline for the security of computer stored and transmitted information and how they apply to LANs; list and discuss potential threats, and suitable countermeasures to threats against LAN networks; and describe the responsibilities, under privacy legislation, of an organisation holding computer databases of personal information.

Synopsis This subject aims to provide students with a grounding in current practice for securing computer systems and open networks, and with an understanding of the legal responsibilities of organisations that maintain databases of personal information. The syllabus includes securing computer systems, privacy in Australia, securing open systems and relevant standards.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 70% + Assignment work: 30%
