FACULTY INFORMATION

Structure and organisation of the faculty

The Faculty of Computing and Information Technology refers, in the wider sense, to all students enrolled for degrees and graduate diplomas offered by the faculty, and all staff (academic, administrative, technical and clerical). The departments of the faculty are (at the Clayton campus) Business Systems, Computer Science, Librarianship, Archives and Records, Robotics and Digital Technology; (at the Caulfield campus) Computer Technology, Information Systems, Software Development. The schools in the faculty are the Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology and the Peninsula School of Computing and Information Technology. The faculty also operates the Pearcey Centre for Computing at the Caulfield campus.

In the legal sense the faculty is a statutory body comprising all full-time members of the teaching staff. The main business of the faculty is delegated to the faculty board, a smaller body of about twenty-seven that includes all heads of departments and schools, other departmental representatives, representatives of other faculties, the Computer Centre, and the library, and representatives of graduates and students of the faculty. The faculty board normally meets every six weeks from February to December. The board has standing committees that have the power to act on behalf of the board when an immediate decision is required. These committees include: the Education Committee, that advises the board on matters relating to the coursework degrees and diplomas offered by the faculty, including student workload and assessment, admission and selection, and new course and subject offerings; the Research Committee, which advises the board on matters relating to the graduate research programs of the faculty, including admission, selection, and maintenance of appropriate academic standards; the Unsatisfactory Progress and Exclusions Committee, which considers cases of students who become liable for exclusion because of unsatisfactory academic performance.

The chief officers of the faculty are the dean (who is located on the Clayton campus), the four associate deans (two located at Clayton and two located at Caulfield), and the faculty registrar (who is located on the Caulfield campus). The dean presides over meetings of the faculty, the faculty board and its committees (in some instances the associate deans preside on behalf of the dean). The faculty registrar is responsible for providing secretariat services needed by the faculty, and providing information on policy and planning.

Any student wishing to see the dean, an associate dean or the faculty registrar is normally able to make an appointment at short notice. Inquiries should be directed to the relevant faculty office.

Students wishing to bring any relevant matters to the attention of the student members of the faculty board should contact the faculty office at Caulfield.

Pearcey Centre for Computing

The Pearcey Centre for Computing is the faculty's specialist computing training centre based at the Caulfield campus. The centre is named in honour of Dr Trevor Pearcey, foundation dean of the Faculty of Technology at Chisholm Institute (now Monash University). Dr Pearcey was one of the pioneers of computer science and is credited with development of one of the earliest computing machines.

The centre offers a wide range of short courses to industry clients and members of the public. It has access to all the facilities of the faculty, and its lecturers are drawn from faculty staff, supplemented by outside experts when required.
