Retail management principles

6 points + One 2-hour lecture and one 1-hour tutorial per week + First semester + Caulfield

Objectives On completion of this subject students should be able to describe the scope and development of retailing, particularly in Australia; demonstrate an understanding of the issues, problems and practices involved in running a retail operation; describe the strategic concepts, principles and techniques necessary to manage a retail enterprise successfully; assess career opportunities in retailing.

Synopsis An overview of retailing from a management perspective. The development of retailing; the Australian retail industry and its environment; merchandising planning, control and distribution; pricing merchandise; selling and sales promotion; store location, layout and presentation.

Assessment Tutorial: 10% + Minor assignments (2500 words): 25% + Major assignments (3500 words): 30% + Examination (2 hours): 35%
