Objectives On completion of this subject students should recognise the importance of effective communication; demonstrate an understanding of the objectives and variety of business communication situations; possess a satisfactory level of skill in the various forms of written and oral business communication techniques; understand the use of electronic communication and technology appropriate to contemporary management functions.
Synopsis Seminars and practical class sessions designed to develop oral and written communication skills; communication process and basic principles of business writing; effective message organisation; report writing techniques (including referencing); report analysis; communication for crisis and change; negotiation; delegation and assertion; communication for public relations; communication within meetings; electronic mail and associated issues; practical job search techniques; communication for career advancement.
Assessment Written (2000 words): 25% + Seminar presentations: 15% + Laboratory assignments: 20% + Examination (2.5 hours): 40%.
