Objectives At the completion of this subject students should have a thorough understanding of all aspects of the tourism industry and its management, and be able to adopt a managerial perspective, emphasising the importance of analysis, planning implementation, and control.
Synopsis The subject will treat the following topics: concepts and definitions of tourism and the evolution of the tourism industry; the tourism system, including its institutions and the relationships between them; tourism products and markets; the operations and management of tourism organisations; the economic and social performance of the tourism industry, including methodologies for estimating the direct and indirect outcome of investment; forecasting in tourism; and the international context of tourism. The fundamental role of strategic and tactical research in the decision support systems of managers in the tourism industry will be accentuated.
