Applied operations management

Lecture to be advised

6 points + One 3-hour session per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisite: MBA5550 or MBA5460

Objectives To extend the students' knowledge beyond the foundation level subject in operations management; to develop analytical skills for finding solutions to long, medium and short term decision problems in the context of the operations function of an organisation; to enable students to appreciate the strategic role of the operations function; to facilitate students to apply the techniques learnt in the class room to real world problems.

Synopsis The subject covers long, medium and short term decision making in the operations function of an organisation. Topics include location and capacity planning, aggregate planning, line balancing, scheduling and sequencing, quality management, maintenance management, and manufacturing strategy. Illustrations from service industries are used to highlight the applicability of techniques.

Assessment Assignments: 50% + Case Analysis: 50%
