Objectives On completion of this subject students should be familiar with the process of developing a manufacturing strategy; familiar with the competitive advantage which can be developed through manufacturing; able to integrate the manufacturing strategy with the corporate strategy and the other functional strategies; familiar with the various decision areas which make up the manufacturing strategy; understand the relationship between the various decision areas.
Synopsis Process of strategy development; competitive priorities; decisions concerning capacity and facility location, product and process technology, total quality management, just-in-time and material requirements planning, supplier-contractor relations. Much of the discussion will be based around Australian case studies.
Assessment Individual assignment (2000 words): 25% + Class participation: 15% + group assignment (3000 words): 45% + Oral presentation: 15%.
