Structure and management of cooperative businesses

Objectives The subject is designed to familiarise students with the structure and management of cooperative businesses on a comparative basis, within Australia and overseas.

Synopsis Students will be introduced to applications of the cooperative model of business in areas including manufacturing, agriculture, finance and service delivery. The subject will set Australian cooperatives in their historical context, discuss principles and theories of cooperative organisation, describe and analyse successful cooperative businesses, examine cooperative legislation, relate organisation along cooperative lines to other methods of achieving business objectives, and present information about opportunities for further adoption of the cooperative approach to business in Australia.

Assessment A case study prepared as a member of a syndicate: 50% + Individual case study or 3000-word essay: 50%
