Technology and organisational change

Lecturer to be advised

6 points + One 3-hour session per week + Second semester + Clayton

Objectives On completion of this subject students should have an understanding of the process of technological innovations, the relationship between technology, organisation structure and organisation strategy; and the effects of technology upon organisational members.

Synopsis This subject is concerned with the interplay between technology and organisational change. Fundamentals of technology are first discussed, based on an historical perspective, on examination of different types of technologies (eg in manufacturing, service and high-tech industries) and on examination of the multiple roles of technology as a change pressure, a process tool and an outcome of change. Established models of organisational change are analysed in terms of an historical overview and a distillation of generic issues. A number of current organisational models, themes and metaphors are then examined, including time-based competition, entrepreneurial organisations, learning organisations and service organisations. A systematic analysis is also undertaken of underlying similarities and differences between these approaches.
