Industrial relations

Objectives On completion of this subject students should understand the origins, history, structures and methods of operation of Australian industrial relations institutions, how these institutions interact with each other, the pressures for change in the industrial relations system and the directions in which the system is evolving.

Synopsis The subject introduces the environment, parties and processes involved in Australian industrial relations, as well as relevant theories. Although the focus is upon Australia, overseas comparisons will be used as appropriate. The subject aims to create an understanding of industrial relations at the macro level and to develop analytical skills appropriate to solving industrial relations problems. Topics covered include employer associations and management, theories of unionism, conciliation and arbitration, enterprise bargaining, grievance and disciplinary procedures, wages policy, and legislative reform of industrial relations.

Assessment Written (assignments 4000 words): 40% + Examination: 60%
