Objectives On completion of this subject students should have examined the changing nature of work and the employment relationship; understand the concept of workplace bargaining and its value to particular organisations and society; have developed knowledge of the major issues arising from the increasing emphasis on a workplace employee relations; have gained knowledge and skills in the field of employee relations which are useful to the practising manager.
Synopsis This subject provides an introduction to employee relations at the enterprise level focusing on the evolving system of work place reform. It is concerned with both theory and practice and topics covered include the contract of employment; enterprise bargaining; workplace management and union structures; traditional management style and strategies; management strategies; employee participation; best practice; skill formation; and core/peripheral employment patterns. The subject also provides students with an understanding of the external context of employee relations.
