Objectives This subject is designed to provide students with an organisational framework for understanding the nature of modern management practices, problems, and issues. Utilising a strategy, structure, and behavioural framework, students learn to appreciate the significance of different theoretical approaches to the study of management practice. By linking theory to management practice (and vice versa) students gain meaningful insights into the dynamic, complex and interdependent nature of managerial work, and a heightened awareness of the major environmental pressures and challenges facing managers today.
Synopsis This subject introduces students to the foundations of management by discussing the evolution of scientific, administrative, behavioural, and contemporary management of organisations, the structure and design of organisations, and individual/group behaviour in organisations. To integrate strategy, structure, and behaviour the subject concludes with an examination of globalisation and organisational change issues.
Assessment Two assignments (each 2500 words): 50% + Examination (3 hours): 50%
