Objectives On completion of this subject students should have developed an advanced level of understanding of applied urban economic analysis; understand the economic way of marshalling economic principles and appropriate data to evaluate selected contemporary topics in urban economics and economic development; be able to critically evaluate regional and urban policy; and be able to formulate and understand the implications of alternative policy options.
Synopsis This subject is addressed to selected contemporary topics in urban economics and economic development. These include urbanisation processes and economic development; economics and diseconomies of city size and growth; urban transport, congestion and the urban environment; urban spatial structure; financing urban public services and the role of government in urban areas.
Assessment Written (3000-word essay): 40% + Examination (3 hours): 60%
