Objectives Students should have obtained a basic knowledge of the general theoretical principles of demographic growth in relation to economic growth, and should know how to apply them to explain Asian economic growth.

Synopsis An examination of the relationship between population growth and economic development in Asia during the last two hundred years. Some of the following topics will be covered: the history of famine; disease control; cultural values; fertility; imperialism and the demand for cheap labour; land use and agricultural technology; industrialisation; the modern demographic transition; and government birth control programs. Special reference will be made to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.

Assessment Written (3000-word essay): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 60%
