Objectives On completion of this subject students understand the main causes of underdevelopment and development of developing and/or poor countries; be informed about the main characteristics which affect the economic development of these countries and their development strategies, policies and programs; be able to analyse the possible effects of different types of policies on economic development. Examples will be mainly from Asia and Africa.
Synopsis Definition of economic development; characteristics of developing countries; theories of economic development and underdevelopment; the possible effects and application of agricultural, population, domestic saving, domestic and foreign investment, foreign aid, human resources, and international trade policies on economic development.
Assessment Written (2400-word essay): 25% + Oral presentation: 5% + Examination (2.5 hours): 70%
