Objectives On completion of this subject students should understand the economic role of education and training; the relations between education and economic growth, education and income equality, and education and employment of youth; the demand for education places; whether the education system serves to reproduce social divisions; be able to examine the policies which governments pursue in providing and financing education and training.
Synopsis A variety of theoretical approaches will be taken in the discussion of the above issues: the neo-classical (human capital) approach, the Leontief fixed-coefficient (manpower planning) approach, the institutional (internal labour market/screening hypothesis) approach, and the `radical' (socialisation/legitimisation) approach.
