Objectives On completion of this subject students should understand the nature of economic imperialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the uses of a thematic approach to economic history.
Synopsis The economic impact of British rule in India since the early nineteenth century, with some broad references to other regions, where useful. The approach is thematic, not chronological. The themes include the history of famine; caste, religion and economic development; modern and traditional entrepreneurship; economic exploitation; destruction of handicrafts; the impact of international capitalism; agricultural growth and economic diversification.
Assessment Written (3000-word essay): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 60%
