The scholarship is awarded to encourage and assist students to complete an honours specialisation in the field of economics, commerce or business. It is awarded on the basis of academic merit but the selection committee may also take into account other factors such as potential ability for investment banking industry. The value of the scholarship shall be $4000 for one year.
Candidates for the scholarship must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia.
Students who are invited to undertake fourth year honours receive an application to apply for the scholarship in the mail.
To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be enrolled in the third year Bachelor of Commerce subjects which permit progress to the Bachelor of Commerce (honours) degree in accounting and/or finance. Candidates for the scholarship must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia.
Students are selected for interview for the scholarship based on their overall academic performance in the first two years of the Bachelor of Commerce course. The Department of Accounting and Finance will initially select the students. The winner of the scholarship will be chosen on the following criteria: overall academic achievement, personal motivation for completing the honours year and the ability to promote the honours year among fellow students.
The scholarship provides for a return airfare to London and a salary whilst the successful applicant is in a training position at Quantum International Ltd. The duration of the scholarship is open to negotiation but could be in the order of two to six months. In 1993, the scholarship was worth in the order of $40,000. The scholarship holder is given the opportunity to work with the chief executive and other senior personnel within Quantum International.
These students will be interviewed by a scholarship selection committee comprising those associated with Bill Sidwell, members of the advertising industry, the head of the Syme Department of Marketing and the dean of the faculty.
The selection committee will consider documentation provided by the candidates and will invite them to explain how their career development could be accelerated and enhanced. Based on this information the committee will determine who should be supported and the manner of that support.
It is envisaged that financial support will be provided for initiatives such as attendance at an international advertising conference, secondment to a North American or Asian advertising agency or participation in an overseas marketing study tour.
