The course
The Graduate Diploma of Business (Labour-Management Relations) is a fee-paying
graduate course by distance education designed primarily for graduates from a
range of disciplines who wish to develop their industrial relations and human
resource knowledge and skills.
Course objectives
On completion of the course students should:
+ have a vocationally oriented understanding and comprehensive knowledge
of Australian labour management relations theory and practice which satisfies
the needs of graduates from a range of disciplines;
+ have acquired skills in the analysis and synthesis of labour relations
practices through examination of current theories and models of industrial
relations and human resource management;
+ have an understanding of the dynamics of the labour market, the nature
of industrial law and the linkages of these to management practice.

objectives and standards of this labour-management relations course.
Entrance requirements
Normally, admission to the course is open to applicants who possess a pass
degree, or equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution, who
have had at least three years work experience, preferably in an area of
industrial relations, employee relations or human resource management.
Applicants without a first degree who have at least six years relevant
employment experience should consult the course director as to the availability
of an executive certificate in the discipline area.
Technology requirements
It is strongly recommended that students have access to a personal computer.
(Please note that the School of Business and Electronic Commerce is an
IBM-compatible windows environment.) It is also recommended that students have
access to a modem to facilitate e-mail communication with teaching staff.
Credit for work done elsewhere
Credits and exemptions may be granted for relevant partially completed
postgraduate studies. The merit of these applications will be determined on a
case by case basis. It is essential that subjects submitted for credit and
exemption fit the philosophy and principles of this post graduate course of
study. Overseas qualifications must be assessed by the National Office of
Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) to be considered. Subjects studied more
than ten years ago are regarded as beyond a reasonable time limit for
applicability and therefore are not acceptable for credit/exemption.
Fees
This is a fee-paying postgraduate course for which no additional liability
under the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) will be incurred. For a
student undertaking the normal workload of two subjects per semester, fees of
$800 per subject will apply. An additional fee will apply for amenities and
library service. Fees paid may be tax deductible in accordance with Section
51(i) of the Income Tax Assessment Act, but students will need to determine
their own tax position.
Application procedures
Applications close the first week in February (first intake) and the first week
in June (second intake). Fees are payable on acceptance of an offer. An
administration fee is payable for those students who withdraw from the course
before 31 March (first intake) and 31 August (second intake).

The course
The Graduate Certificate of Business (Management) is a fee-paying graduate
course by distance education designed primarily for graduates who wish to
increase their knowledge of management theory and practice. The course makes
extensive use of case studies, in-house situations and workplace projects with
a particular focus on Australia's current economic and social climate.
Course objective
On completion of the course students should:
+ have the appropriate management expertise to develop commitment and
proficiency in the use of strategic and dynamic approaches to modern
management;
+ have the ability to link these management activities to high quality,
customer focused outcomes;
+ understand the importance of an effective grounding in management and
its application;
+ have a broad understanding of current management theory, processes, and
change issues in an uncertain business environment;
+ have fostered the skills to enable them to successfully continue in
their managerial careers or to articulate into higher degree studies.
Course structure
The course will consist of four (4) subjects usually selected from existing
Graduate Diploma of Business (Management) subjects (six points each). Normally,
these will be completed at a rate of two subjects in each of two successive
semesters. Mid-year enrolment is permitted and encouraged. The maximum time
permitted to complete the course shall be two (2) years. Subject selection will
follow these regulations:
All students will satisfactorily complete one compulsory core subject:
GBU8001 Management theory and practice (semester 1)
and a minimum of one additional core subject selected from the
following:
+ GBU8003 Management processes and systems (semester 1)
+ GBU8002 Human resource management (semester 2)
+ GBU8004 Financial management (semester 2)
+ GBU8010 Marketing management (semester 1)
+ and a maximum of two (2) other subjects selected from either:
+ the remaining core subjects above (GBU 8002, 8003, 8004, or 8010) or
+ elective subjects, including those listed below, which are offered in
the Graduate Diploma of Business (Management).
+ GBU8018 Business law (semester 1)
+ GBU8034 Industrial relations (semester 1)
+ GBU8042 Organisational behaviour (semester 1)
+ GBU8044 Financial institution management (semester 1)

Course structure
The course aims to develop and enhance analytical skills and to teach critical
appraisal techniques. The Graduate Diploma of Business (Management) is a
two-year part-time distance education program. It consists of a total of eight
(8) subjects with a value of 6 credit points for each subject. Flexibility is
ensured by permitting completion of two elective subjects in areas of
professional focus. Normally, subjects are completed at a rate of two subjects
in each of four successive semesters and each subject involves an average of
twelve hours of study per week. The maximum time permitted to complete the
course is four (4) years.
To qualify for the award, a minimum of forty-eight credit points must be
earned; or, a minimum of twenty-four credit points must be earned in addition
to the original twenty-four credit points earned for the Graduate Certificate
of Business (Management)# or Executive
Certificate of Business (Management)#.
Upon successful completion of the Graduate Diploma of Business (Management),
students are eligible to enrol in the MBA program offered by the Monash Mt
Eliza Business School. In some instances, students may be permitted to enrol in
a masters degree by research program.
There are six common core subjects, five of which normally will be
satisfactorily completed prior to the integrating strategic management subject
GBU 8005:
+ GBU8001 Management theory and practice
+ GBU8002 Human resource management
+ GBU8003 Management processes and systems
+ GBU8004 Financial management
+ GBU8010 Marketing management
+ usually followed by;
+ GBU 8005 Strategic management (an integrating subject, to be
+ taken near the end of the course).
In addition, students will satisfactorily complete a maximum of two (2)
elective subjects from graduate level subjects, including those listed below;
+ GBU8006 Management strategy project
+ GBU8009 Training and development
+ GBU8015 Economic policy
+ GBU8018 Business law
+ GBU8019 Computers in business
+ GBU8028 Introduction to tourism

These and any other complementary graduate level, distance education elective
subjects (eg `Health administration' and `Engineering management'), must
satisfy the objectives and standards of this award and are selected, subject to
availability, with the advice of the course director.

The course
The School of Business and Electronic Commerce offers a masters degree by
research. Entry to this course is open to applicants who have obtained a high
level of academic achievement in their undergraduate courses.
The course may be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis. The duration of
the program will normally be a minimum of twenty-one calendar months of
full-time work (or its equivalent for part-time work) and a maximum period of
thirty-six calendar months (or its equivalent part-time).
