Introduction to the faculty

The Faculty of Business and Economics operates on the Berwick, Caulfield, Clayton, Gippsland and Peninsula campuses and in Sydney, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. It has approximately 10,000 students and offers a wide range of undergraduate degrees, executive certificates, graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, masters degrees by research and by coursework and a doctor of philosophy degree. These courses are available through a range of study methods including distance education and open learning as well as the more traditional on-campus study.

The mission of the faculty is to use its scale, scope and unique internal diversity to become an international leader in the pursuit, dissemination and analysis of knowledge, particularly in the disciplines of accounting, banking, econometrics, economics, finance, management, marketing and tourism. By the application of that knowledge, its staff and students will contribute to the economic, social and commercial development of Australia and other countries.

The term `Faculty of Business and Economics' in the wider sense includes all students enrolled for degrees, executive certificates, graduate diplomas and certificates offered by the faculty, and all staff (academic, administrative, technical and clerical) attached to the campuses which make up the faculty.

The faculty is a body established under university statute. It is made up of members of the teaching staff and other persons as appointed by university council. The responsibility for making decisions in the faculty lies with the faculty board, which comprises heads of schools and departments, representatives of the teaching staff, student members (international, undergraduate and postgraduate), representatives of other faculties and the library. Except in certain matters on which it has power to act, the faculty board makes recommendations to the Academic Board and through the Academic Board to the Council of the university.

The faculty also has a number of committees including an executive committee, undergraduate and graduate studies committees and committees for research, library, technical and computer services, budgets, quality assurance, admissions and credit transfer, open learning and distance education and advertising and public relations.

The dean, as chief executive officer of the faculty, provides academic leadership to the faculty, presides over meetings of the faculty board and its committees and exercises a general superintendence over the educational and administrative affairs of the faculty.

The faculty registrar is responsible for the administration of the faculty with a particular concern for matters relating to university statutes, faculty regulations, the provision of advice on policy to faculty board and its related committees and student services management. The faculty registrar, together with the campus executive officers and the administrative officers, are available to attend to the needs of both undergraduate and postgraduate students within the faculty. The director, finance and resources is responsible for the efficient and effective management of the faculty's financial and resource activities.

Structure of the faculty

The departments and schools in the faculty operate on five main campuses in Australia.

+ Accounting and Finance - Clayton

+ Business Management - Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula

+ Econometrics - Caulfield, Clayton, Peninsula

+ Economics - Clayton

+ School of Business and Electronic Commerce* - Berwick, Gippsland

+ Syme Business School - Frankston, Peninsula

+ Syme Department of Accounting - Caulfield, Peninsula

+ Syme Department of Banking and Finance - Caulfield, Peninsula

+ Syme Department of Marketing - Berwick, Caulfield, Clayton, Peninsula

Each department and school holds regular departmental meetings which report to faculty board.

During 1994, Monash University and the Mt Eliza Australian Management College together established the Monash Mt Eliza Graduate School of Business and Government Limited, known as the Monash Mt Eliza Business School. From 1995, the school has been responsible for the teaching of MBA courses and some other management related courses for the university. Students who were enrolled in such courses before the beginning of 1995 remain students of the university. Students now enrol through the Monash Mt Eliza Business School.

Some similarities and differences exist in these bachelors courses. Guidance is frequently sought as to why a prospective applicant should select one course instead of another. The following information may be helpful.

Similarities in the bachelor degree courses

+ All include a general multi-disciplinary introduction to the course over the first and part of the second year.

+ Major sequences are available in one or two disciplines during the second and third years.

+ Students are provided with the skills to understand and analyse the Australian and international economies.

+ Australian and international students are provided with skills and experiences to enable them to embark on an interesting and productive career over a lifetime as educated people.

+ Selected students, who achieve excellent results in their first three years of study, have the opportunity to do an honours degree.

Differences between the bachelor degree courses

+ The Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Business Studies, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Economics degrees allow students to choose one or two discipline majors. These generic degrees provide a base of a minimum of six compulsory subjects and allow students considerable flexibility in their choice of discipline majors. The courses provide a range of specific disciplines and a student's choice of major study may be made at the end of the first year of study.

+ The specialist discipline Bachelor of Commerce degrees offered at Clayton allow more subjects to be studied within the specified discipline area, but otherwise allow the flexibility of choice available in the generalist degree.

+ The specialist discipline Bachelor of Business degrees offered at the Caulfield and Peninsula campuses provide a general multidiscipline business base of normally thirteen compulsory subjects while also focussing on a particular specialisation or discipline. Courses are structured in accordance with the requirements of the specialised discipline major.

+ While all campuses teach their courses in the on-campus study mode, some courses are also offered by distance education, and teaching in some courses is also available through Open Learning Australia. Students undertaking the undergraduate courses on the Clayton and Peninsula campuses are almost entirely school-leavers with the majority studying full-time. The Caulfield campus enrolments include many part-time students, as well as full-time students, and the campus has evening classes. More than seventy per cent of the students enrolled at the Gippsland campus are studying by distance education.
