Synopsis The subject aims to consolidate prior knowledge of modern Greek, and to introduce students to the study of modern Greek culture and thought through (1) practical language work and a systematic study of the language; and (2) reading authentic texts (including creative literature) in Greek and discussing them in Greek orally and in writing. Topics studied include the Greek folk songs and traditional society; the Ottoman period and the Greek War of Independence; the `language problem'; Vasilis Arvanitis, a study in levendia.
Assessment Written (2000 words): 25% Examination (2 hours): 50% + Language assignments and exercises, oral test: 25%
