Traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art
8 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites:
Full first year with one of ABS1, ABS2, GSC1801, GSC1805, VSA1010, VSA1020,
VSA1040, VSA2230, VSA2250, KRS2020
Synopsis A study of Australian Aboriginal traditional and contemporary
art. The main topics will include traditional Aboriginal art, its history,
approaches, forms, techniques, methods, social and communal aspects; uniqueness
of Aboriginal art; its uses; Aboriginal identity through art; its effects on
non-Aboriginal people, rise of contemporary Aboriginal art; collecting and
exhibiting Aboriginal art; tourist art versus fine art, copyright, production,
critics and reviews and marketing.
Assessment Tutorial paper and written summary (1000 words): 10% +
Assigment (3000 words): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 40% + Attendance and
participation: 10%
