Nationalism and revolution in Southeast Asia

Jane Drakard

8 points + 1 lecture and 1 two-hour seminar per week + Second semester + Peninsula + Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in history or Indonesian/Malay

Synopsis Southeast Asia's affairs today are powerfully influenced by the developments in the recent past. These form the focus of this subject. By 1910, almost all of Southeast Asia except Thailand had fallen under colonial rule. Yet only half a century later, most of the people of Southeast Asia had moved away from imperial control or were on the way to doing so. This subject explores the emergence of Southeast Asia from colonial rule to independence. Lectures provide a thematic framework, with tutorials focusing on issues such as peasant uprisings, changes in the balance of traditional societies, nationalism and the formation of new states.

Assessment Document exercise and two essays (total 5000 words): 75% + Examination (1 hour): 25% (Students may submit a 1000-word essay in place of the examination)
