Human biology 1: the human organism I

Synopsis This subject introduces students to the study of human physiology from the perspective of health and fitness. Topics to be covered include health and homeostasis; body fluids, food nutrients and their metabolism; the role of the liver in homeostasis; anaerobic and aerobic exercise; diet and energy balance; the structure and function of the cardiovascular system; the structure and function of the respiratory system; the immediate effects of exercise and physical training on body physiology; the effects of diet and smoking on body physiology and on the development of disease; cell structure; nerve cell structure and function.

Assessment Essay (1000 words): 20% + Practical work: 30% + Examination (2 hours): 50%
