Authorship and writing

8 points + First semester + 3 hours per week (1-hour lecture, 2 hours discussion) + Gippsland/Distance + Prerequisites: English major GSC1401 and GSC1402; mass communications major GSC1901 and GSC1402; writing major, two of GSC1401, GSC1402, GSC1901. This subject is available for the mass communications, writing and English majors. Students may use equivalent subjects as prerequisites, or obtain permission from the subject adviser.

Synopsis This subject combines the opportunity for students to develop and reflect upon their own creative writing skills with the critical study of a number of literary and media texts. The notion of authorship will be interrogated in relation to a variety of writing practices. The Romantic conception of the author (and that of the film auteur) will be examined in the light of recent critical theories. The situation of writers will be considered in the contexts of gender, class, and historical and geographical location.

Assessment Essay (2000 words): 30% + Essay (2000 words): 30% + Examination (2 hours): 40% + The total word length for assessment will not exceed 6000 words
