Sociology of race and ethnic relations

8 points + Equivalent to 3 hours per week + First semester + Gippsland/Distance + Prerequisites: GSC1201, GSC1202 or equivalents. Students who have completed 6224 (Sociology of ethnic relations) cannot enrol in GSC2202

Synopsis This subject will emphasise the study of social relations between racial and ethnic groups in selected societies. The subject will pay special attention to the place of ethnic and Aboriginal groups in Australia. The concepts of race, racism, ethnicity, prejudice, discrimination and multiculturalism will be analysed and discussed in detail. The subject will cover several contemporary social issues including how and why racism developed in Australian society and how it is expressed in contemporary Australian society.

Assessment Assignment one (1800 words): 30% + Assignment two (2200 words): 40% + Final examination: 30%
