Synopsis Recent changes in economic structure and development have been felt in the pattern of urban and regional development in Europe. This subject will investigate the evolution of urban and regional change in Europe in the past thirty years, and isolate some of the main causes of these changes. The main focus will be on the process of economic restructuring in relation to the type and location of employment. This will be illustrated by analysis of change in the major cities, new industrial regions, older industrial regions and the rural periphery. The subject concludes with an analysis of the consequences of these changes for the European Regional Fund.
