Synopsis This subject, together with GAS1502 (Introduction to psychology B), provides a general introduction to the discipline of psychology as a behavioural science, and a basis for further detailed study of specific areas of psychology. The major theme of the subject is a study of the basic principles of behaviour with an emphasis on experimental methods and laboratory techniques in psychology. The topics covered include the biological bases of behaviour, the processes of human learning (conditioning and cognitive processes), sensation and perception, states of consciousness, motivation and emotion. Distance education students are required to attend at least six hours at weekend schools. Students for whom attendance is difficult may request permission to undertake alternative work.
Assessment Methodology assignment one: 15% + Methodology assignment two: 25% + Laboratory book: 10% + Examination: 50% + A pass on the examination is a requirement for successful completion of this subject
