Synopsis Recent change in economic structure and development has been felt in the pattern of urban and regional development in Europe. This subject will investigate the evolution of urban and regional change in Europe in the past thirty years, and isolate some of the main causes of these changes. The main focus will be on the process of economic restructuring and its impact upon the location of employment. This will be illustrated by analysis of change in the major cities, new industrial regions, older industrial regions and the rural periphery. The consequences of these new patterns for the activity and expenditure of the European Regional Fund will be analysed as a conclusion.
