Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics offers three disciplines in the Faculty of Arts, namely pure mathematics, applied mathematics and mathematical statistics as well as a major sequence of subjects in applied statistics (arts), the details of which are given under a separate entry labelled applied statistics in this handbook.

Students may take a major or a minor sequence in each of the three stated disciplines; the minor sequence meets the minimum requirement set by the State education system to qualify as a high school mathematics teacher. Details of mathematics subjects may be seen in the handbook for the Faculty of Science.

Honours degrees are offered in the three disciplines above as well as in the general subject mathematics. Students whose results at third year are sufficiently good will be invited to join the fourth (honours) year.

Information about graduate studies in mathematics is also available in the Department of Mathematics entry in the handbook for the Faculty of Science; further information is available from the Department of Mathematics.
