Jewish civilisation

The Faculty of Arts is currently developing a major sequence in Jewish Civilisation. In 1996 subjects that can be taken at either second or third-year level include JWC2560/3560 (Modern Jewish history) and JWC2580/3580 (The Holocaust) and JWC2550/3550 (Jewish civilisation before the modern era).

A new course introduced in 1995 JWC2590/3590 (Alexandria-Jerusalem-Rome: connections and conflicts) is being offered jointly with the Department of Greek, Roman and Egyptian Studies.

Additional subjects will be offered in future years. As electives in other major programs, these courses may be taken without prerequisites. Students contemplating a major in Jewish civilisation are advised at first-year level to choose from relevant disciplines such as sociology, history and politics. Two first-year subjects offered by the Department of History, HSY1070 (Contemporary Europe: origins), and HSY1080 (Contemporary Europe: East and West) allow for the study of topics in Jewish History. At second or third-year level, students may choose RLT2480/3480 (The religious quest: Judaism, Christianity and Islam) as an optional subject towards a major sequence.

For further guidance, consult Professor Bernard Rechter, acting director of the Centre for Jewish Civilisation in the Department of History.
