Economics

The Department of Economics offers major and minor sequences in economics, economic studies, and economic history. The economic history options are described in a separate section below. The economics and economics studies sequences both require the subjects ECO1000 (Economics) and ECO1010 (Economics). (Students who have completed the discontinued subjects ECO1020 and ECO1030 or ECO1100 and ECO1110 may substitute these for ECO1000 and ECO1010.) Thereafter the requirements are as follows.

Economics

Major sequence

ECO2000* (Intermediate microeconomics) and ECO2010* (Intermediate macroeconomics) and four other Department of Economics subjects, of which two must be third-year level subjects that are not available at second-year level.

*Subject to final university approval.

Minor sequence

Any three second or third-year level Department of Economics subjects.

Economic studies

Major sequence

Five second or third-year level Department of Economics subjects.

Minor sequence

Any two second or third-year level Department of Economics subjects.

It should be noted that the subjects ECO2000 and ECO2010, which are prerequisites for several higher level subjects offered by the department, require the same level of VCE mathematics as is required for entry to the Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Economics, ie a grade level of D in one of Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics. There are no specific prerequisites for ECO1000 and ECO1010.

The subject ECO3880 (Social economics) is available to third-year students who are not taking and have not taken any other subject from the Department of Economics.

Subjects taught by the Department of Economics are available only on the Clayton campus.

Faculty of Arts students may undertake honours work in economic studies as part of the specialised social science degree.

All students enrolling in subjects taught by the Department of Economics must have their enrolment approved by an adviser in the office of the Faculty of Business and Economics. Where there is a choice of lecture groups, students will normally be allocated to a group at the time of enrolment and may not change without permission. Where, in later years, subjects are taught in both semesters, students will be allocated to a group by the faculty adviser when they are interviewed on re-enrolment.

First year

Second year

In second year, the Department of Economics offers subjects as set out below, each of which is worth eight points. Students who have obtained a division 1 pass in ECO1020 and ECO1030 prior to 1995 and who wish to pursue a major sequence must enrol in ECO2000 (Intermediate microeconomics) and ECO2010 (Intermediate macroeconomics). Students who have passed ECO1020 and ECO1030 and who wish to pursue a minor sequence may enrol in ECO2000 and ECO2010, or in two of the following subjects. Students who have passed ECO1100 and ECO1110 prior to 1995 may enrol in ECO2000 and ECO2010 only with the permission of the relevant lecturer.
