Indonesian and Malay

The Department of Asian Languages and Studies offers a major and minor sequence in both Indonesian language and Indonesian studies. Students may take a double major in Indonesian language and Indonesian studies, or combine a major sequence in one with a minor sequence in the other. Furthermore, students may combine majors and minors in Indonesian language and Indonesian studies with other major and minor sequences in accordance with the regulations of the Faculty of Arts.

Note: Students taking a major or minor in Indonesian studies cannot take the same subjects in the context of Indonesian language. Persons not having a major or a minor in Indonesian studies may use up to sixteen credit points of Indonesian studies subjects towards their Indonesian language major.

The aim of language courses is to bring students as rapidly as possible to the stage where they can interpret Indonesian texts of moderate difficulty correctly and can express themselves adequately in both spoken and written modes, on the basis of a thorough knowledge of grammar on the one hand and an appreciation of Indonesian social and cultural life on the other. In order to facilitate this social and cultural understanding, some Indonesian studies units may be undertaken within the major in Indonesian language (providing the student does not have a major or minor in Indonesian studies). Such units are chosen from a range of options available at second and third-year level. Other options include courses in regional Indonesian languages (Javanese and Sundanese).

There are three streams in Indonesian language: (a) beginners, for those who have no previous knowledge of Indonesian; (b) intermediate, for those who have completed VCE Indonesian or its equivalent; and (c) advanced, for native speakers or those of comparable status.

Note: Those who have passed VCE Indonesian must take the intermediate stream, and native speakers must take the advanced stream. Speakers of Malaysian are considered as being of comparable status to native speakers of Indonesian.
