Synopsis Given that anthropological work in Papua New Guinea has been
carried out in a colonial or post-colonial setting, it is important that the
resulting texts be examined with this fact in mind. Thus, in this subject
anthropological debates are discussed in terms of the interrelationships
between small-scale `traditional' societies and Western sociopolitical
structures.
