Readings in Australian art

8 or 12 points + 2 hours per week + First semester + Clayton

Synopsis The seminars will address the literature on Australian art with reference to such areas as settlement and `European vision', the Australian inflection of modernism, periodisation, the construction of art history through the art exhibition and its catalogue, the manifesto, the literature of export and international exhibition, provincialism and regionalism, the reception of current art. The subject is designed to address historiographical and theoretical issues with relation to the writing on Australian art and to identify areas for revision and research. A detailed bibliography will be issued.

Assessment (8 points) Seminar paper (2500 words): 40% + Essay (3500 words): 60%

Assessment (12 points) First seminar paper (2500 words): 25% + Second seminar paper (3000 words): 35% + Research essay (3500 words): 40%
