Survey of Japanese business communication practice

8 points + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: JBC4830/5830 (Administrative and business Japanese)

Synopsis Students will have a choice of three topics to conduct a survey and produce a critical and analytical paper: (1) business practices with particular emphasis on interpersonal aspect, (2) the use of polite style language in business situations, and (3) practices and conventions of writing Japanese business documents. Students doing this subject will not only obtain a full overview of communication practice in Japanese, but will also apply both theoretical and linguistic knowledge which students have acquired in the preceding core subjects. The emphasis will be on the students doing independent work on a chosen topic. Students will be given a supervisor to guide them through their work. Several joint seminars will be organised during the semester to discuss problems which arise.
