Advanced studies in Japanese sociolinguistics

8 or 12 points + 2 hours per week + Clayton + Prerequisites: Completion of or concurrent enrolment in level B Japanese language

Synopsis An advanced introduction to the discipline of sociolinguistics in its application to the study of Japanese and English usage in contact situations. Special emphasis will be on the issue of the relationship between language and society, language problems, and methods and techniques of inquiry. Students who have not studied this subject at the undergraduate level are required to attend an additional two hours of undergraduate lectures per week.

Assessment (8 points) Project (3000 words): 45% + Review or transcript (2000 words): 15% + Test (1.5 hours): 40%

Assessment (12 point) Project (4500 words): 45% + Review or transcript (2000 words): 15% + Test (2.5 hours): 40%
