Understanding Malaysian society and culture

Synopsis This subject deals with key elements that have shaped and continue to shape Malaysian society and culture. It examines the sociopolitical factors leading to the transformation of Malaysian society as well as issues of relevance to contemporary Malaysia. Areas examined include historical bases of contemporary Malaysian society and socioeconomic issues of concern such as language, education and women's issues. Emphasis is also placed on developments in Malaysia and their bearing on Australia-Malaysia relations.

Assessment Written assignments (reviews of topics of current interest): 30% + Research report (4500 words): 50% + Seminar participation: 20%
