Introduction to French phonology

Synopsis The purpose of this subject is to provide an introduction to the study of spoken French. Following a brief linguistic overview of French, two major structural areas will be considered: phonetics and phonemics. The phonetics component will analyse the actual sounds of French, their production, articulatory description, and phonetic transcription. The phonemics segment of the subject focuses upon the systematic organisation and distinctive features of the French sound system.

Assessment Tutorial quizzes: 20% + Mid-term phonetics test: 30% + Final class test (2 hours): 50%
