Synopsis The subject aims to familiarise students with techniques for environmental assessment of public and private works and to critically evaluate their effectiveness. The most common technique is the preparation of an environmental impact statement (EIS). The history of the development of current procedures for EIS and their legislative background both in Australia and overseas, together with their associated advantages and problems will be examined. Some practical experience in preparing an EIS will be provided. Methods involved in defining social, health and economic impacts in relation to environmental impacts will be studied and evaluated. Environmental assessment associated with auditing and with policy development and implementation will also be discussed.
