Beowulf and Old English poetry

8 or 12 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: Students are expected to have completed successfully ENM2170/3170 and ENM3370 (or their equivalent)

Synopsis Beowulf, with special emphasis on the second half of the poem, and the poems of the Vercelli Book Manuscript (ie `Andreas', `Elene', `Fates of the Apostles', `Dream of the Rood' etc). Texts will be read in Old English. Seminar discussions will include both literary and linguistic topics.

Assessment (8 points) Assignment/s (2500 words): 40% + Essay (3500 words): 50% + Class performance: 10%

Assessment (12 points) Seminar paper on Beowulf: 20% + Seminar paper on either `Andreas' or `Elene': 20% + Major essay (5000 words): 50% + Class performance: 10%
