Synopsis This elective covers an identification and broad understanding of the major public health problems in developing countries such as malnutrition and communicable diseases, as well as the declining resources available to deal with them. It includes a discussion of the common community-based, national and international approaches to managing these problems. It will deal with specific issues such as health care for refugees, malaria, STDs and AIDS, immunisation programs, acute respiratory infections and diarrhoeal diseases. It is primarily directed at those with little or no experience in developing countries and will use participatory learning methods.
