Synopsis Students will enrol in this subject to have their results accredited to their degree at `Advanced Chinese' level. Students will select Mandarin Level IV at the Nanjing Normal University, China. This subject includes the study of a variety of textual materials, including selected articles from Chinese news media and unabridged literary pieces by famous writers. The goal of this subject is to enable students to articulate their ideas in both written and spoken Chinese at a more sophisticated level in order to convey their deepening understanding of Chinese society and culture. In addition, students are required to take part in programmed cultural interaction and to participate in regular fieldtrips (there is a half-day or a full-day excursion most weekends) designed to introduce students to some aspect of Chinese society, history and culture. Where possible, such fieldtrips will involve students in language practice. All students in China school will receive an outline of the fieldtrips prior departure and they are asked to schedule any other travel plans outside of these times if possible.
Assessment Examination (written and oral) 3 hours: 90% + Class performance (undertaken in China): 10% + NB Granting of accreditation to a Monash degree is dependant upon passing an exam at Monash University in the Department of Asian Languages and Studies on return to Australia.
