Tourism and development in the Asia-Pacific Region

Synopsis Tourism is a major international industry which is increasingly
being utilised by developing countries to promote economic growth. This subject
examines the nature and impact of tourism in the Pacific and evaluates the cost
and benefits of tourism as a development strategy. Special attention is paid to
political, cultural and environmental questions. Alternative forms of tourism
such as eco-tourism are discussed. Government policies affecting tourism
development will be evaluated.
Assessment Essay (6000 words): 90% + Class participation: 10%
