Issues in computational linguistics

12 points + 3 hours + First semester + Clayton

Synopsis The subject which will be project-based, will critically survey, and attempt to apply, frameworks proposed in the current literature relevant to a subfield of linguistics suitable for computational treatment. No prior programming experience is assumed, however students are expected to be prepared to approach linguistic data in a manner consistent with computer-assisted analysis. The focus for 1995 is lexicography. The subject will draw an insights linguistics, computer science and cognitive science.

Assessment Two computational assignments (3500 and 2500 words each): 70% + Practical (computational) exercises equivalent to 2000 words: 20% + Class participation: 10%
