Synopsis The subject focuses on issues of literacy and the learning of English as a mother tongue. We consider the nature of linguistic competence and its implications for judgements about literacy standards, the place of grammar in English teaching, and the socio-cultural constructions for English speakers. Approaches to the teaching of reading, writing and speakingwill be examined; also the value of linguistic analysis in the understanding of both literary and non-literary texts, the interpretation of students' writing problems, classroom research and the assessment of students' linguistic performance.
Assessment Research Project (5000 words): 60% + Take-home text: 20% + Classwork: 20%
