Objectives By the completion of this subject students are expected to have demonstrated that they can define an issue or significant topic concerning history or theory of art and negotiate with their supervisor a valid approach to researching and communicating informatively about the chosen topic; that they can take responsibility for relatively independent study and show advanced use of library resources; and that they can use conceptual and critical language with skill.
Synopsis This subject consists of supervised research into a topic on an aspect of art history, theory or criticism and will give students the opportunity to develop advanced skills in analysing and criticising the literature of art. Students will negotiate a research topic with a subject adviser, and consideration will be given to the availability of resource materials before a topic is approved. Students will work towards the submission of a formal essay which shall normally consist of a critical review of the literature on the approved topic. The subject areas listed in the subject outline for subject GVA3551 may be of assistance in the formulation of a research topic.
